Surveying is rich in history. I want to take a moment and share some highlights of the Milwaukee and surrounding areas. What is a Continental Divide? Its a natural fault in the earth where water will drain towards a major body of water one. The St. Lawrence Continental Divide runs through Washington, Waukesha, Racine and Kenosha County's. In Washington County, I-41 runs parallel with it and then through Menomonee Falls, Brookfield, New Berlin and Muskego. Everything West of this divide will drain towards the Mississippi and everything East will drain towards Lake Michigan.
Surveying uses the term Point of Beginning everywhere, so I thought it was relevant to mention the Point of Beginning for Milwaukee. The Northwest corner of N. Water Street and W. Wisconsin Avenue is the Point of Beginning of what is now Milwaukee. In 1800 the very first Log cabin was built at this a location and was considered the hub of all future development and transportation. And today it resembles the same and is memorialized with a Plaque on the lower level of the building facing the Riverwalk.
